Densetsu Elemental Shitennou No Silver Millennium: Author's Notes

When I first started writing this, I had only intended on writing an English-based version with Zoisite being female and only of the first season from the Silver Millennium to the demise of the Dark Kingdom. However, after watching my fansubs and reading the manga, I decided to write a Japanese-based version with Zoi in his original form, as well as extending the fic to cover the later seasons. After all, the Tennou were originally Endymion's honor guard, a fact that didn't seem to be acknowledged in the anime series.

Aside from falling in love with Naoko-sama's lovely artwork and the original storyline, I also wondered; "What would happen if the Tennou were around for the later seasons?" They made a number of appearances in later mangas, although as spirits, but I felt that they deserved a lil' bit more screen time than what was given to them. We see little into their lives except that supposedly, they are just Beryl's pawns and pure evil. We learn nothing of their history, whether or not they were originally human...none of the points that were made or hinted at in the manga.

With that in mind, I pulled up some of my earlier D.K. fanfiction that I had written about two years ago and read through them. A number of the things I had written I liked, but some I threw out or changed. Furthermore, I went back to read E. Liddell's Crystal Weaver Saga(Excellent read! Check it out Here), which had inspired me to write the Tennou as Elementals. After all, the Sailor Senshi had powers based on the elements, why not our beloved Tennou as well? Not only that, but Cartoon Network had begun to air dubbed versions of SMS and SMSS series and I was able to see what went on in those seasons, even if it may or may not have been badly mangled. As I continued to watch, I began to plot out how I could fit the Tennou into the seasons.

Why The Tennou Were Revived

As I watched through the last few episodes of the first season in subtitle, I realized that there could be a few loopholes in reviving at least three of the Tennou.

First off, Jadeite-kun was simply frozen and stored away. We never really see Beryl destroy his body. For all we know, he could have been stored in a mausoleum or behind Beryl's throne. Thus, when the power of the Ginzuishou flooded Point D, if he really had been stored somewhere in that crystal, then he would have been revived and healed and remembered his past life.

Both Zoisite and Kunzite/Malachite died within the boundaries of the Dark Kingdom/D Point. Granted, there was nothing left of them in the anime beyond sparkles of dust and sakura petals, but it is noted in the manga that when the Tennou that had been killed were exposed to the Ginzuishou's power, they turned into their respective gemstones. Thus, I decided to mix elements of the manga into this fanfic and Zoisite and Kunzite/Malachite's stones would be somewhere in the Dark Kingdom to be healed and revived as well.

Nephrite-kun, on the other hand, died outside of the Dark Kingdom and would not be touched by the power of the Ginzuishou. However, when he had died, he had died touched by the power of love and a traitor to the Dark Kingdom and it's cause. Because of this, it would be relatively easy to revive him since he had died with his heart clean of evil.

Why Obsidian Is In The Story

General Kurokami Obsidian is written in partially to round out the number of five to the Tennou group. For a number of reasons, the Tennou would not wish to return to Endymion and serve him, but form a team of their own. Both Obsidian and Malachite/Kunzite can serve as the leader, but for the most part, that falls to Malachite/Kunzite. Furthermore, I thought that a Death Elemental would be an interesting addition, being the opposite of the life-giving Ginzuishou. Not necessarily a dark, evil person to be an opposite of Serenity, simply a carrier of a power opposite of the Ginzuishou.

Obsidian was also written as a counterpart to Jadeite. He was not given much of a personality in the anime(although he seemed to make slightly sexist comments in the Japanese version - "Can't you do anything without men? Foolish girls. Your Tuxedo Kamen is dead. Scream and cry.") and was the only Tennou that did not fall in love with either another Tennou or a human. Besides that, he is also the one that a number of people think is least likely to feel emotion. I personally would not think he was completely incapable of feeling emotions beyond anger and hatred and fear, but Obsidian would certainly help him feel less of those emotions.

Furthermore, I liked the idea of a Dark Shitennou, one who looked cold and distant like some of the Outer Senshi. Outside of the D.K, the Tennou looked as if they carried powers of light as the Inners did. Obsidian was chosen to carry a darker power to balance the Ginzuishou and to state that light could not exist without the darkness, that there must always be a balance between the two. I chose Sailor Pluto to be her mother simply because Saturn is much too young to be a mother and Uranus and Neptune are together and neither one could possibly be Obsidian's mother outside of some very twisted hentai fiction.

Why Jadeite And Zoisite Are Twins In The Japanese Version

Well, the main reason was that I had managed to obtain volumes 1 and 2 of the Chinese version of the artbooks of Naoko-sama's work. I had seen the picture of the Tennou paired with the Inners before on websites and was happy when I realized that I had managed to get a book that it came from. It became my favorite picture in that book and still is. After a closer look, I noticed the close similarities in Zoisite and Jadeite's faces. Not only in that particular picture, but in the manga as well. They were never seen together in the anime, so I could not speak for similarities there, but there were some interactions between the two in the manga and I was able to see how much they looked alike.

[Jadeite Face] [Zoisite Face]

The more I looked at these two, the more I thought that they could have been twins. It was never stated in the anime or the manga if any of the Tennou were related, but in my opinion, if any two of them were to be related, it would have to be Jadeite and Zoisite. They have the same haircolor, even if it is different lengths. It is difficult to tell in any images I have seen of the two since they have not been put back to back or side by side, but they could be close to the same height. Even though Zoisite is slimmer and Jae looks a bit older, their body shapes are similar. Aside from different eye colors, their faces are nearly identical, with Jadeite-kun's being slightly pudgier or more rounded and Zoi's being slimmer, more angular.

With that observation made, I asked a few friends if they thought the two looked alike and when more often than not, they said yes, I decided to write them as being twins, if in only one version. I had considered doing so in both versions, however, I still liked the idea of Zoi being Jae's older sister in the English version, as I had done in my past fanfiction. So I kept it. Ages were debatable, particularly given how old they looked in the group picture, but them being twins would settle that in at least the Japanese version. The English version was based on the anime and that I thought Zoi looked a little older than Jae.
